Create every day, flow and fun included—no matter what

There’s nothing worse than getting excited about an idea, setting aside the time, organising your supplies in a neat little row, and
nada. Where did the time go? Did the dishes seriously take that long? Maybe there was a wobble in the space, time continuum because wow, I just watched a lot of Blackadder.

Let me take a moment here to tell you: this is totally normal. No one told us that creativity and emotions are tied together like trouble and Harry Dresden. And, if left unchecked, the emotions turn into resistance, which makes you feel bad, and you quit. Perfectly natural.

Fortunately, a problem of such epic proportions doesn’t require a nuke-from-orbit response. Using nothing fancier than a blank page, craft paint, and your favourite pen, we can learn how to nonchalantly slide around the inner critics, ‘why bothers’, fears and judgement. Feel free to flip them the bird on the way past—this is the fun, effortless way to start creating again AND keep you doing it!

Supercharge your creativity and wellbeing, fearlessly

If you’re too busy worrying about how it’ll turn out, what other people will think, or if it will sell, then chances are pretty good you’re not going to even start. And even if you do, it often doesn’t turn out right (and is now a gently smoking pile of ashes because you attacked it in a fit of firebally frustration). This focus on the outcome is how most creative classes are taught. The problem? It’s the perfect way to draw the attention of the inner critic and all its not-so-helpful friends!

There’s another way—we focus on the process instead. The Visual Journal Studio method looks easy: scraping paint around with a plastic card, doing some writing, tearing images out of magazines and glueing them down. So simple. And so harmless your resistance rolls right over and goes back to sleep—nothing to see here! And all the while, you’re practising being fearless on the page, trusting yourself, being curious, and listening to what your creative soul really wants to tell you. And look at that! You’re creating, loving it, and all that creative nurturing is seeping into your everyday life and wellbeing.

Get your “ooo, I wonder”, and “YES!” back

There’s a reason you create—you HAVE to. And it feels so darned good! The bubbling anticipation. The giddy excitement. The rush when you get an idea or follow an inkling. The moment you awaken from the flow trance and do a double-take, “whoa, check that out, that’s awesome!”

You may not have felt those tummy fizzes for a while
let alone laughed in joy when you realise what’s spontaneously turned up in whatever it is you’re making. But with fun doses of creativity in a safe, private, consequence-free place where you’re free to explore with wonder and childlike curiosity (AKA your visual journal)
zing! Magical things start to happen.

Sounds magic, because it is! (And is also highly practical)

Your visual journal is where you can express yourself with images, colour, pattern, and texture, drawing, and words. The pages will bloom with paint, paper, glue, graphite, and ink. You’ll glue in extra paper, secret pockets, and flaps. In your hands, a book will emerge that’s part art, part journal, part guidebook—and all uniquely yours.

You know you need to replenish your creative well, make a playdate with your inner child, and find your creative process (wherever you left it), but you have no idea how to even start. Your visual journal is where you can do all this. Even if you’re trapped by the resistance. Even if you have no fancy art supplies or a studio. Even if you don’t call yourself an artist.

As a certified Visual Journal Studio creativity coach, let me help you find your way and take the most important step: the next one.

For two weeks, you’ll get:

A Reframe of the Day—because the stories we tell ourselves about our creativity are never the whole truth.

A Visual Journal Story of the Day—a real visual journal page, complete with tale behind it (warning: may include traces of nerdy Dungeons & Dragons and Star Trek quotes).

Journal Prompts of the Day—to make the reframe yours.

And a Wonder of the Day—because wonder and curiosity are where creativity starts (also, if you’ve ever wondered how many goats fit in a tree, here is the answer!)
